Differences Between ATVs And Motorcycles As Modes Of Alternative Transport
All terrain vehicles or ATVs and motorcycles as a mode of transport can be quite similar. Both are a form of motorized bikes. In each case the drivers sits astride the vehicle and makes use of handlebars to control speed and to steer. There are a number of differences between the two types of transportation.
Wheels: Motorcycles have generally got two wheels, where as ATVs had four and sometimes three wheels. The additional wheels aid in the stability of the vehicles when moving over rough terrain or at slow speeds. Their two wheeled counterparts require skill and stability from the driver over the range of speeds, particularly at slow speeds.
Invention: invention occurred at different times. The motorcycle was invented in 1885 whereas the first quad bike was in 1982. In some countries, including and not exclusive to the United States, passengers are not allowed on quad bikes. This is for safety reasons because a passenger would prevent the driver from being able to manoeuvre easily. Motorcycles are comparably safer to have passengers.
Size: ATVs are bigger than motorcycles and therefore require more storage space and transportation space. Due to the restriction of use of ATVs on public roads, transportation trailers are necessary to get them to their intended destination. Motorbikes do not use up as much space during transportation, but are not restricted from public roads and so may be driven to the location.
In terms of serious injuries and deaths the use of ATVs causes more than their two-wheeled off road counterparts, dirt bikes. This is mainly due to the weight of the quad bikes and the fact that if they land on the driver during an accident then they can crush him. There are also no regulations that state that the driver of a quad must wear a helmet at all times and so most do not. It is compulsory though for an off road biker to wear a helmet though.
Both types of vehicles have got a range of engine sizes depending on the amount of power that the driver wants. Both also have smaller sizes available for children to ride. It is advisable that children ride with adult supervision and whilst wearing the right safety gear, particularly helmets.
